Learning to use a Sewing machine IS EMPOWERING
Learning to use a sewing machine is empowering. If we learn to use our minds & hands in harmony we can create, we can update, repair & upcycle. By doing this we can empower ourselves & boost feelings of well-being. We can increase dexterity & improve focus. We can learn important life skills & have fun making cool stuff.
Amanda Riley is a Fashion & textiles designer, teacher & environmentalist. She has created a beginners eco-sewing programme to support DT in schools and communities.
“Amanda has a wealth of experience in fashion, and her course is driven by those ideas, to help children learn not just to sew but create original and interesting items. She makes the process fun as well, which helps to make learning easier. She has a natural talent (and patience) to inspire young minds.”

Fashion Rebellion Sewing Club has been a huge success at our school. Children love it and are very proud of their creations. Parents are so keen for their children to attend we are starting a third club this term. We can't keep up with demand!! This has been one of our most successful clubs ever.

Thinking about buying a sewing machine?
For a beginner I recommend a good basic full size domestic sewing machine. Second hand or new. Go for a good brand like Janome, Pfaff, Brother, Husqvarna, Bernina, Elna.
Avoid LED & digital machines there’s more to go wrong & it’s more complicated. We need a straight stitch & a zig zag stitch. Most basic machines have some embroidery stitches too.
If it’s second hand you may need to have it serviced. Toy machines are for only good for making lightweight dolls clothes & are often noisy. You can do everything you need on a basic domestic machine including free style embroidery.
